Nordstrom Anniversary 2010 Beauty Exclusives

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Only second to Christmas in my book is Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale where new stuff comes in at big time discounts and all of the beauty brands offer value sets and exclusives that you won’t find anywhere else. You can shop the sale online and in-store from now until August 2, so let’s check out the specials that matter most; cosmetics.

Estee Lauder

Their super popular Pure Gloss collection is introducing 4 limited-edition shades just for this sale. Creative Director Tom Pecheux whipped up his favorite colors for the season, the ones he uses most in his personal kit for fashion shows and photo shoots. ($18)

Lauder is also having a free gift with purchases over $29.50, it’s a 7-piece set valued at $100.

Chanel

Everyone loves a Chanel shadow quad. I might have to get these shades of matte and shimmery wet/dry shadows because I love the flair they gave to otherwise neutral shades. ($65)

Dior

This ‘Ready-to-Wear’ Palette packs a lot of color into such a small space.  It includes 4 shadows, 2 lip glosses, 1 blush, a 3 tone bronzer, and 3 mini applicators in wearable shades to flatter most skin tones.

Deborah Lippmann

Looks like nail color goes from summer subtle to glittery glam this fall. Lippmann’s All That Jazz set includes the new, fun shades Razzle Dazzle, Some Enchanted Evening, and Lady Sings the Blues. ($40)

Bobbi Brown

This ‘Must Haves’ collection will be a hit with Bobbi Brown lovers because it’s so quintessential Bobbi. The set includes a 5 piece shadow palette with a dual ended brush, full sized Everything mascara, Ultrafine Eyeliner Brush (love), full sized Caviar gel liner, full sized Brownie lip color, and a Pink Blossom lip gloss. All told the set is valued at $150, but it’s a steal at $75.

Trish McEvoy

Add a little petite planner to your Trish planner collection. Her ‘Naturally Irresistible Collection’ includes a petite page for the mini planner with their new Warming Brightening Quad, 4 new shadow shades, black eye pencil, and Nude Shimmer gloss. ($95)

Laura Mercier

I might have to get Mercier’s Portable Beauty Collection just for the bag. They included their most popular shades into a split-pans for cheeks and eyes giving you 2 eye and 2 cheek colors. You also get a dual ended gloss, Long Lash mascara and dual-ended brush.

Every beauty line is offering something, these are just a few. You’ll find a complete listing of beauty exclusives and gift with purchases HERE

Line High/ Low: Bobbi Brown

Every line has a few signature items, the ones for which they’re known and others try and duplicate. Similarly, each line has a few items that aren’t that great and are eventually phased out or re-formulated. Here’s my Line High/ Low for Bobbi Brown.

Highs:

Their Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner is their hands down best formulated item out of the line. It wears as indicated and the color selection is perfectly complete. These are must-haves in makeup artist’s kits and something I personally wear all the time.

If you have yet to find a perfect foundation, go for their Foundation Stick which also doubles as a concealer. Adjust the coverage exactly they way you like it, adding more where you need it and less where you don’t. All skin types can use the stick except for very oily, and the 17 shades offered have you covered no matter what your skin tone.

Rarely talked about and totally underrated is their Lash Glamour mascara. What makes it unique is the gel formula (traditional mascaras are cream) that can be used over any mascara to give a glossy false lash look, or of course used on its own.

Lows:

I’ll never understand the Shimmer Bricks. Even using a light-handed approach can leave you with shimmer overload, especially outside in daylight. Adding a pink shade to the equation (versus a bronzer) adds another challenge since a shimmery pink face doesn’t seem like a desired effect.

Now I love their Eye Shadow colors as much as I love the new packaging for the custom palettes. I guess the only problem is the shadow formulas themselves. Creasing varies from color to color, and so does intensity. Some shades glide on easily, while others make you work harder than you care to trying to create depth.

3 Great Lipsticks

How many times have you gone to a cosmetic counter searching for a lipstick, but instead left frustrated after rummaging through way too many choices that didn’t seem to work. I’ve chosen 3 that I often use on shoots and on brides that wear well and stay true, so maybe you can have a few options before you’re at the store making life a little easier.

Twig is a color I’ve used for years. It’s versatile and doesn’t turn orangey like some neutral pinks can. It’s a winner every time on women who are fair to medium, but skin that’s darker than olive, or women who have a lot of natural color to their lips might find they need something deeper.

Looking for something with medium intensity that’s almost a neutral plum? If you find that lip colors tend to turn orangey on you, Bobbi Brown’s Slopes (pictured middle) is a great bet. It manages to maintain the difficult balance of being sheer and moisturizing at the same time. It’s one of the few go-to shades I have that looks great on all skin tones.

Red is a shade all women want to wear until they have it on. True fire engine reds are hard to pull of, but deep reds mixed with a little plum or brown to make it more of a brick red are a lot more forgiving on the complexion. Daring fair haired beauties can wear M.A.C Dark Side (pictured right), as well as olive skin and deeper skin tones. Dubonnet from M.A.C is a really versatile brick red for all skin tones when Dark Side is a bit too plum

Best Foundations for Medium to Deep Skin Tones

Too many cosmetic lines are missing the boat when it comes to a full line of foundations for all women. Here are a few companies whose offerings of foundations for deeper skin tones are right on the money.

MAC’s Studio Sculpt SPF 15 foundation is a gel based formula that offers great medium to full coverage that’s water-resistant and very long wearing. Available in 23 shades, $28, online or in stores.

Jane Iredale’s premier line of mineral makeup is award winning year after year for a reason. It’s a great product. Their line has the deepest shade range I’ve seen in a mineral line, and the colors are fantastic. 10 shades available for medium to deeper skin, $48, Beauty.com or in select spas.

Bobbi Brown was among the first to create foundations that were skin tone correct, meaning they had yellow based undertones that looked more like skin than formulas prior. Soon after, other lines took notice and put a halt (for the most part) in creating peachy and pinky foundations that didn’t look like skin and didn’t blend. Bobbi has 7 different foundation formulas that contain deep shades including her new Skin Foundation SPF 15 with a technology that gives the appearance of skin and not makeup. $45, BobbiBrown.com, and select department stores.

If all else fails, you can’t go wrong with Iman, a line designed with women who can’t find a foundation to match their skin in mind. 4 different formulas include an oil-free stick foundation that’s virtually undetectable on the skin. $15, Walgreens.com DuaneReade.com, and select stores.

Bobbi Brown on her new book; Makeup Manual

Bobbi Brown Everything/ Lash Glamour Mascara Duo

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Bobbi Brown Everything/ Lash Glamour Duo for months, and since it’s a limited edition, it’s probably best to snag it up soon.

Bobbi took a page from makeup artists and combined the two mascaras since we were first applying Everything mascara for its volume and definition, then putting the waterproof Lash Glamour over it to seal it all together and add tons of shine.

The combination of a cream mascara with a gel one on top literally gives the look of a shiny, long false lash that one mascara alone can’t duplicate.

Most mascaras are cream, so if your Bobbi counter is out of the duo, get the Lash Glamour and apply it over what you’re using now. The shine, along with the variance in textures makes such a fun difference.
