Beauty Big 3 with Kelly Killoren Bensimon

Fact: when we toured the hospital where I was supposed to deliver Harper (it turned out to be booked the day I went into labor so we high tailed it to another hospital), I really wanted to know if Bravo was a part of their cable package. I couldn’t imagine being there for 2 days without my Housewife fix. I love Watch What Happens Live, Flipping Out, Top Chef, and of course all the Real Housewives (except Miami..) franchises. Some people drink, some people smoke, I watch Bravo. So of course I’m following (most of) them on Twitter and Instagram to see snaps of their lives in real-time even when the cameras aren’t rolling. I’ve been really loving former New York Housewife, ‘I Can Make You Hot’ Author, and fashion it girl Kelly Killoren Bensimon’s pics that she posts on Instagram. It’s a fun glimpse of she and her daughters bouncing around NYC and the Hamptons along with some of her appearances and red carpet stuff sprinkled in every now and again.

Because she always looks amazingly well put together, I thought I’d reach out to her and see if she’d let me in on her favorite mascara, moisturizer, and foundation for my Beauty Big 3 series. It’s the 3 products I feel are most important and the ones I’m always curious to hear what other people are using. She was kind enough to respond with her faves and here they are:

Mascara: L’Oreal Voluminous

Moisturizer: La Mer, Créme de la Mer

la mer

Foundation: BB Cream from Too Faced

She also said she likes the Matriskin Cleanser, Tom Ford Eye Color Quads, Johnson’s Baby Lotion, and the Wild Bluebell Cologne from Jo Malone.

I love to hear that she wears Johnson’s Baby lotion! That smell is so powdery and light- it’s just nostalgia at its best. I’m also a fan of the Too Faced BB Cream which has a ton of coverage and a great shade range. Of course she loves Créme de la Mer because it’s amazing (her skin screams ‘there’s something expensive on me!’), and she’s a fan of drugstore mascara just like me.

Makeup Before and After: Glam Mom

Recently I got to work with Nicole, a busy mom who (like the rest of us) rarely has a reason to get all out glam. I made her up for a shoot she did last week and the before and afters were so great I couldn’t wait to post them! I can’t wait to see her final images from her photos which I know will be amazing. Check out what I used below to get her look.

Her eyes: Copper is such a perfect way to add tons to depth to any look- even for everyday. Her dropped liner on the bottom was Pixi’s Copper Glow smudged out for a more dramatic look. I used Neutrogena’s cream shadow all over under her powder shadow to prevent creasing and to really give the shadow something to stick to. Stila’s Ebony and Kitten were her two main shades, which gave the perfect amount on contrast and pop.

Her face: A silicone primer sometimes isn’t enough moisture (often the case here in Colorado), so I used Miracle Skin Transformer’s Heal Everything Balm which absorbs quickly but leaves the skin hydrated and primed so blending foundation is easy and it sits beautifully on the skin. I mixed together shades 1 and 2 in Koh Gen Do’s Maifanshi Foundation which as you can see gives a ton of great coverage without looking heavy. I buffed in Dermablend’s Mineral Powder on top to chase away any shine without a hint of a dull or powdery look.

Her lips: These lips are the kind most women pay for- big and full and just begging for color. I mixed together two nude shades over a pinky liner and skipped the gloss. The sheen was enough and without the gloss her color would wear longer.

Milani Cosmetics

I’m not on Facebook that often anymore, when I can’t sleep my obsession turns to all things Instagram. I float from stranger to stranger usually starting with a celebrity makeup artist, then bouncing around to all of their friends to see what products they use so I know how closely my kit matches up to theirs. Typically I’d say we’re all using pretty much the same thing, but when I found one artist who posted a huge table loaded with Milani cosmetics boasting about how it’s the only drugstore brand in his kit I was totally stumped. What’s Milani?

Apparently it’s a family owned business focused on producing high quality cosmetics at drugstore prices (I didn’t see anything over $10 online.) They’re rumored to be pigment-rich and long wearing, it’s an under-the-radar cult fave that I’ve somehow missed.

Noted from the artist in the photo was their shadows, including their long-wearing shadow crayon called Shadow Eyes 12 He Wear and their Liquid Eye Liquid-Like which is an eyeliner that gives the look of a liquid but with the ease of using a pencil.

I hear they’re at Sears and Walgreens, but most people just buy online which is what I’ll probably do, then I’ll report back of course and let you know my thoughts.

Estée Lauder Pretty Naughty 2013 Spring Collection

Spring is around the corner so it’s the perfect time to grab some vibrant shades of pinks, plums, blues, and greens to add to your probably too-brown makeup arsenal. Lauder is bringing full-on feminine front and center with their Pretty Naughty spring line. Just little pops of color like this can make a big difference in updating your look so take the plunge and try a new color or two this spring.

Their gelée formula blush is so easy to apply. Use the sponge in the compact to ‘dot’ on where you’d like the color to go, then blend it in using your fingers. Creme blushes tend to look more natural on the skin and wear longer, they also don’t collect on fine hairs on the face (photography tip!) so when you’re outside or in bright light, your makeup is undetectable

Pure Color Illuminating Powder Gelée Blush $40

I’m dying to try their Sheer Matte Lipstick since matte formulas are often heavy and thick. I’m hoping this one gives coverage and color without the weight.

Lately, Lauder’s shadows are rivaling Dior’s iconic palettes in terms of great color combos. That cool brown and charcoal will anchor any look from casual to evening by using them on the lid or as liners. Use the pink, purple, and blue either on the lid (when in doubt just keep the color below the crease), or you can smudge them under your lower lash line, or even dot your eye’s inner corners. If you’re using them to line under your eyes, use a black liner in your water line to give the look a more modern spin.

Five Color EyeShadow Palette $48

Don’t forget the nails. I’m obsessed with purple, so I’m always happy when it’s on-trend. A great polish on your nails goes a long way in looking more put together. Since I’m pretty casual anyway, getting my nails to a more fashionable state might be just the easy spring update I need.

Buy This Palette: NYX Wicked Dreams

NYX is one of my favorite all time brands because of their quality offerings at a great price. I use it, I buy it, it’s in my kit. This palette reminds me of the iconic Naked palettes from Urban Decay that have the same sort of shades but half as many and for $50. Wicked Dreams has 24 shadows valued at $130 but for just $15. In it you’ll find every shade you’ll ever need: neutrals, plums, flats, shimmers, and a few that double as liners.

I buy NYX at Ulta, but click HERE to see where else they might be offered in your area.

And Speaking of Sephora..

While I was at the JC Penny opening at Park Meadows I couldn’t help but to fall in love with a few things that I’m sure I’ll pick up during my next Sephora outing.

Josie Maran Bronzing Argan Oil: I put a few drops on my fair skin and watched the shimmering bronze color melt. giving way to a natural looking tan glow. Just a few drops gave rich, natural color and a ton of moisture. I’d use it solo or mixed with another body oil to tone the color down a bit and make the bottle last longer.

I know I’ll be picking up a few Aqua Shadow Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils (pictured top middle) from MAKE UP FOR EVER, a line I love and carry a ton of in my kit. Just the slightest sweep of the pencil gave big color that was hard to remove and easy to layer. They seemed perfect for laying down color on the eyes and are formulated to resist creasing or smudging.

Aqua Rouge Lip Colors (middle, bottom) are another stay-in-place staple that I’ll grab. MUF’s Aqua line is a long-wearing collection that really delivers. I have a ton of MUF Aqua stuff in my kit because it’s the real deal- bold colors that blend and wear like nothing else.

And of course another fav line of mine, Tarte. They just launched a new foundation Maracuja (middle, center) which includes the nourishing oil of the same name to reduce inflamation, hydrate, and give skin a healthy glow. I’ve always had good luck with Tarte- nothing in the line has ever disappointed me or made my skin angry.

Another Tarte offering caught my eye, their new trio of Clean Slate primers (pictured right.) One for the eyes and two for the face; one to brighten and the other for perfecting the look of pores. I’m always up for a new primer- anything to make my skin look better.
