MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Rouge Liquid Lip Color

Warm weather makeup is all about bright colors that can beat the heat. MAKE UP FOR EVER has their stay-in-place game tight with their Aqua Rouge collection. I’ve replaced most of my other long wearing lip colors with their Liquid Lip Color because it has what the others lack- a glossy finish. Other long wearing lip colors might stay put but they do that thing where they collect in the corners of your mouth and look dry and flakey. These have a light glossy top coat to lock the color in and give your lips a sheen that looks and feels like any other cream lipstick.

When I apply them, I lay down the lip color first, then use a liner to get a good boundary before adding the clear gloss. For years now I’ve used Aqua Lip liners in my kit- they’re creamy enough not to drag and they don’t bleed or breakdown.

My brides tell me their lips stay put from the ceremony to the end of the night while only occasionally reapplying the clear gloss to freshen up the color. It’s the real deal for events or for those who aren’t into a constant lip touch-up throughout the day.

Makeup Before and After: Glam Mom

Recently I got to work with Nicole, a busy mom who (like the rest of us) rarely has a reason to get all out glam. I made her up for a shoot she did last week and the before and afters were so great I couldn’t wait to post them! I can’t wait to see her final images from her photos which I know will be amazing. Check out what I used below to get her look.

Her eyes: Copper is such a perfect way to add tons to depth to any look- even for everyday. Her dropped liner on the bottom was Pixi’s Copper Glow smudged out for a more dramatic look. I used Neutrogena’s cream shadow all over under her powder shadow to prevent creasing and to really give the shadow something to stick to. Stila’s Ebony and Kitten were her two main shades, which gave the perfect amount on contrast and pop.

Her face: A silicone primer sometimes isn’t enough moisture (often the case here in Colorado), so I used Miracle Skin Transformer’s Heal Everything Balm which absorbs quickly but leaves the skin hydrated and primed so blending foundation is easy and it sits beautifully on the skin. I mixed together shades 1 and 2 in Koh Gen Do’s Maifanshi Foundation which as you can see gives a ton of great coverage without looking heavy. I buffed in Dermablend’s Mineral Powder on top to chase away any shine without a hint of a dull or powdery look.

Her lips: These lips are the kind most women pay for- big and full and just begging for color. I mixed together two nude shades over a pinky liner and skipped the gloss. The sheen was enough and without the gloss her color would wear longer.

Neutrogena MoistureSmooth color stick

MoistureSmooth is the sweet-smelling love child of lip gloss and lip balm. It’s so light that you only feel moisture when you’re wearing it – perfect if you aren’t into a sticky glossy feel. The color is just right, sheer but still enough to pop which is what gloss lovers crave. It’s casual color at its best. I’ve been wearing Juicy Peach almost every day, I’m obsessed with this rich nude because it isn’t brown or orange, just a perfectly balanced peach that goes with everything and gives the right amount of color I need for just running around during the day.

Makeup Before and After: Coverage and Color From tarte

Of all the BB Creams I’ve tried so far, tarte’s is the only one I’d be able to actually use in my kit. Most BB’s are skin-enhancing, so they give some coverage but not nearly enough to get skin looking great for a long day and tons of photographs. Kelly, is the bride below whose trial run for her upcoming wedding I photographed for a before and after. I used tarte’s latest foundation on her and we were both thrilled with the results. Her skin looked so great that very little concealer was needed and it looked invisible both in person and on camera.

On her cheeks I used tarte’s airblush maracuja blush, which is my new go-to for an easy flush, and then their LipSurgence lip luster on her lips for a finished look that isn’t thick or heavy.

… And After! There was a slight change in the natural lighting, but the photo isn’t re-touched at all.

Estée Lauder Pretty Naughty 2013 Spring Collection

Spring is around the corner so it’s the perfect time to grab some vibrant shades of pinks, plums, blues, and greens to add to your probably too-brown makeup arsenal. Lauder is bringing full-on feminine front and center with their Pretty Naughty spring line. Just little pops of color like this can make a big difference in updating your look so take the plunge and try a new color or two this spring.

Their gelée formula blush is so easy to apply. Use the sponge in the compact to ‘dot’ on where you’d like the color to go, then blend it in using your fingers. Creme blushes tend to look more natural on the skin and wear longer, they also don’t collect on fine hairs on the face (photography tip!) so when you’re outside or in bright light, your makeup is undetectable

I’m dying to try their Sheer Matte Lipstick since matte formulas are often heavy and thick. I’m hoping this one gives coverage and color without the weight.

Lately, Lauder’s shadows are rivaling Dior’s iconic palettes in terms of great color combos. That cool brown and charcoal will anchor any look from casual to evening by using them on the lid or as liners. Use the pink, purple, and blue either on the lid (when in doubt just keep the color below the crease), or you can smudge them under your lower lash line, or even dot your eye’s inner corners. If you’re using them to line under your eyes, use a black liner in your water line to give the look a more modern spin.

Don’t forget the nails. I’m obsessed with purple, so I’m always happy when it’s on-trend. A great polish on your nails goes a long way in looking more put together. Since I’m pretty casual anyway, getting my nails to a more fashionable state might be just the easy spring update I need.

Figs & Rose Organic Lipcare

If you love Rosebud Salve, which I’ve used for years, then you have to check out the adorably decorated tins of organic lip balms from Figs & Rouge. They don’t have that same glossy texture of Rosebud Salve, but that’s because they’re petroleum free which is really the only thing that gives that familiar Vaseline slip. Instead, they’re packed with natural oils from fruits, flowers, and plants to really moisturize the lips and leave them smooth for hours so you don’t need to constantly re-apply. I have the one below, Sweet Geranium which I got in July’s Glossybox, I’ll try the CocoVanilla next time.

Find Figs & Rouge at Whole Foods and THESE stores.
