Most Overrated Products

I’m constantly asked to list products that I don’t like since I only write up what I’ve found to be the most effective, so in the spirit of not wasting money- here you go.

Lancome Definicils has been a best seller for years, but I found it to be puny and formula too thin, there was nothing lengthening or thickening about it. It’s meant to separate lashes and was formulated years ago when that was the look- now women want thick lashes and have tons more options. After many years, Lancome felt a change was needed, so they implemented a brush like LashExact. Might as well go for the Cover Girl since it’s the same brush and about $18 less.

Put me in a mall and I’ll pick out the girls wearing M.A.C Studio Fix foundation. I say girls because all young girls love to try this full coverage foundation to hide breakouts, but they usually outgrow it in a year or so due to a few huge problems. It’s incredibly matte. Like super matte. Like a powdery corpse bride. The formula, combined with a heavy handed application cover skin to where its natural luminosity can’t shine through and the transition from face to neck is beyond obvious. Personally, I was tired of looking like a mime in pictures due to the talc, but breaking out is the most common complaint I hear.

I’m convinced the only reason people still use Dramatically Different from Clinique is becuase they used it when they were younger. If you really took a look at what was in there, I think you might make a different choice. Mineral oil is the main ingredient, which is liquid petroleum (think Vaseline), there’s also a few parabens, propylene glycol, and sesame oil. There isn’t anything dramatic about it, it’s actually incredibly basic and outdated because the formulation, (other than removing lanolin in 2006), has never changed. If you’re over 25, you’ve outgrown this moisturizer anyway. You don’t have to leave Clinique to find some great moisturizers using the latest in skin technology, this just isn’t one of them.

TotalBeauty.com Gold Metal-Worthy Foundations

I loved this list that TotalBeauty.com put together of great foundations as recommended by their readers, I’ve tried most of them and they are some of the very best.

Double Wear by Estee Lauder is a foundation I haven’t had a chance to review, but it’s one of those foundations that women stick to for years and years once they’ve discovered it. There’s also a light version for those looking for a little less coverage.

Also agree with; Laura Mercier and Jane Iredale, not so much with M.A.C (Studio Fix- really??)

Missing from the list; CARGO Oil Free and FreshFace Foundation from Fresh- lightweight and tons of blendable pigment.

Glad it didn’t make the list; BareMinerals, the new foundation I can spot on most people due to heavy-handed applications, and the tell-tale sheen.

M.A.C Cosmetics Twig Lipstick

Twig is a perfect brownish-pinkish neutral color that’s both practical enough for daily wear and eye catching enough for special occasions. It leans more toward the pink family, but you can pair it with a brownish tone liner to warm it up.

I’ve been weening myself off my gloss addiction with this little trick. First I pat concealer on my lips to even out the tone so the lipstick color is true and lasts longer, then I gently pat Twig into my lips just lightly staining without adding the heavy texture of lipstick. It wears longer and looks like the nude subtle lips you see on the runway.

M.A.C Paint Pot

Whether you spend 2 minutes or 20 minutes on your daily makeup routine, you can probably benefit from M.A.C Paint Pots. Swipe a little on your lids with your fingers for some quick, long lasting color, or use it as a primer to create a canvas for shadow that doesn’t crease. All of the colors are soft and tame (especially for M.A.C) and the amount given is generous. Soft Ochre has been my go-to primer shade pre-shadow, a soft yellow hued color to cancel out any redness.

M.A.C. Cosmetics 187 Due Fibre Brush

Finding the perfect liquid foundation is difficult, finding the right foundation brush is a no brainer with the 187 brush from M.A.C. So it isn’t technically a foundation brush, but it’s set up perfectly to do the job with a blend of both natural and synthetic fibers to gently lay down foundation, and blend it in at the same time without streaking.
