You Want Me to Put What On My Face??

Snake venom, well actually synthetic snake venom- whatever that amounts to. Facialist to the stars, Sonya Dakar has developed the venom to use exclusively for a facial and in a creme to paralyze the muscles similar to how Botox works without any side effects.

Acne-Fighting Skin Care

Is there anything worse than your skin breaking out? It’s so annoying. The only thing that makes it bearable for me is knowing that it might make me look a little younger. I know, I’m really stretching the limits of my glass being half-full. I’ve tried everything for my often troubled skin, so I know what works and what falls short. Here are a few things to get you through the teenaged skin days without using harsh ingredients that can tear your not teenaged skin apart.

The best thing you can do for troubled skin is to use a gentle daily cleanser so your products can absorb into a calm environment. Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar, a dermatologists favorite because it’s oil-free, and super gentle on even the most irritated skin gives squeaky-clean results without stripping your much needed moisture barrier.

Keeping your pores clear is key when you’re fighting acne so you need to polish away dirt, oil, and dead skin regularly. Use an exfoliant once or twice a week that isn’t too harsh. Using a harsh scrub could make breakouts worse, but Clean & Clear’s Morning Burst Scrub uses mellow beads surrounded by a gel cleanser that won’t cause redness or additional irritation.

Troubled skin is often times oily skin but you have to resist the urge to go completely sans-hydration. Keep your surface comfortable and smooth by using Murad’s Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 to control oil production all day before it can get out of hand and clogs pores.

Of course, you might still see the occasional little visitor every now and again, but when you do, you should have some Trifix Acne Clearing Lotion from Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare on hand. It’s a spot treatment that uses Colloidal Sulfur, a kinder to the skin alternative to Salicylic Acid so the pimple is zapped, but not your skin.

The Mayo Clinic’s Best Ingredients for Fighting Wrinkles

When it comes to understanding the body and the research behind it all, you can trust what The Mayo Clinic has to say. I found a great article on their site about a wrinkle-fighting regimen which offers some tips along with ingredients you want to look for in effective skin care. They didn’t offer product suggestions other than Tretinoin, so I hunted down the products I felt best represented each ingredient they had listed.

Of course their top slot went to Tretinoin, the only FDA approved solution for wrinkle reduction. It’s a derivative of vitamin a and is only available through a prescription from your doctor. It’s something I’ve used off and on throughout the years and encourage women who are starting to see fine lines and even sun spotting to see their doctors for a prescription. It typically isn’t covered through insurance and can be pricey ($80-$100 depending on the pharmacy) but it’s well worth the cost because it lasts a long time and gives visible results.

Hydroxy acids were second on the list, they’re derived from sugar and help to exfoliate the skin and bring the new, evenly pigmented skin to the surface. You’ll want to wear SPF during the day because hydroxy is known to cause heighten sun sensitivity, but the side effects of using alpha hydroxy are typically slight if any. I remember years ago there was a segment on 20/20 where they tested a bunch of higher and lower priced alpha hydroxy creams and found that this one made by Walgreens had the highest content of active AHA and was also the most effective.

Coenzyme Q10 (COQ10) helps to keep your cells on the up and up, I take it as a supplement, but there have been some recent studies that show how using it around the eyes can safely reduce wrinkles. Look for Ubiquinone on the label (the medical name for COQ10) and make sure it appears early in the ingredient list so you know there’s enough in there to work. Hydra-Pure Firming Eye Cream by Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare is a great one that contains COQ10 along with vitamins and peptides for both wrinkle treatment and prevention.

You may not hear a lot about Copper Peptides, but Denver-based skincare company Osmotics has been using them for years. Copper is known for its healing properties and when it’s carried into the skin using peptides, it can rev up antioxident protection and stimulate collagen. Their #1 product for the job is their Blue Copper 5 Firming Elasticity Repair a favorite of their loyal customers and Beauty Editors alike.

Kinetin is a funny ingredient. It’s been quietly popping up in prestige skincare lines for years because it’s effective in moisture retention and wrinkle reduction but we aren’t exactly sure why. Kinerase uses it as an age-preventer along with their own advanced ingredient line up for their new Restructure Firming Cream that targets both sagging and and wrinkles.

Green Tea doesn’t  just provide benefits as a drink, when it’s used on the skin it helps to fight environmental damage and calm inflammation so your skin care can absorb and work that much better. I like it in a simple, organic version like Alba Organics Aloe & Green Tea Moisturizer which is oil-free and ultra light under makeup.

Vivant Skincare for Acne

I’ve been thinking about what I’d say in this review for a while now. For what I do, I try really hard not to make definitive statements branding something to be the ‘very best’ or ‘end all be all cure’ since having a voice in this way delicate thing. I’m not Oprah, but I know that when I review something that I’m truly thrilled about, many of you go out and spend money on it and I take that seriously.

But here’s the thing, my skin looks better than it has in well over 3 years and I know it’s because of Vivant.

It might be due to everything I try out on my skin (every single thing you read about on here in fact) or maybe it’s just a weird hormonal adjustment my body is making, but my face has been breaking out like crazy for years now. I’ve also been struggling with redness and a lot of sun spots from my late teens and 20′s where I *gasp* used tanning beds somewhat regularly and didn’t even own sunscreen.

I guess if you’re struggling with acne you should trust the man who (literally) wrote the book on it. Dr. Fulton struggled with acne so severely growing up that he was determined to figure out what its causes were, so he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and began formulating products in his own practice and eventually co-creating Retin-A. His latest and most complete line to date, Vivant is the result of many formulations and years of his experience in the treatment of acne and aging skin. I believe it’s truly a gift to people who have wasted money on products that didn’t live up to their claims.

I’ll show you exactly what I’ve been using, but keep in mind it was chosen by Vivant for me based on my skin’s particular needs. You can reach out to them (their customer service is amazing) by calling 1-800-9-VIVANT or find a professional near you who uses Vivant and can help you find a custom solution.

BP Cleanser 3% is a thick, pink exfoliating cleanser with 3% Benzoyl Peroxide- a known known acne fighter that kills bacteria and chases away excess oil. I like the exfoliation too which leaves my skin really soft. It’s not a makeup remover though, so I use a pre-cleaning solution before it just to loosen the makeup a little- especially on the eyes.

After cleansing I use the Normalizing tonic Forté in the morning, a Glycolic rich toner that clarifies and deep cleans so the products can better absorb. At night after cleansing, I use  Daily Repair Pads with Mandelic Acid, a well-tolerated alpha hydroxy they combine with zinc peptides that clear out impacted pores. If you’re having issues with pigmentation, these pads will also help cycle those out.

After the Forté toner in the morning, I use Spin Trap Vitamin C&E Serum, a clear soothing protectant that guards cells against daily oxidative stress. At night, in its place I did something I hadn’t done in a while, I ditched my Retin-A. It wasn’t easy since I’ve been using it for so long and I really believe in the power of retinol. I knew though, that the Exfol-A was the equivalent in strength to a .25 Retin-A but it also contained Kojic, Lactic, and Glycolic Acids to lighten sun and acne spots.

BP 10% Gel Medication is a strong spot treatment I use when I can feel something just starting to pop up, but it doesn’t make my skin dry or flakey.

Some of the ingredients like the vitamin a might make skin a little more sun-sensitive so I use their Day Treatment Lotion SPF 15 as my daily moisturizer.

I don’t need a lot of moisture at night, so I found Totaloe to be just enough. It’s an aloe-based serum-gel that helps to heal and calm the skin as well adds a touch of hydration.

Again, this is just what was recommended for my skin specifically based on what I was trying to achieve, the condition of my skin, and what it was used to judging from the products I had been using (like a strong Retin-A).  It was an á la carte regimen, but keep in mind they also have systems for acne, aging skin, discoloration, and basic environmental  prevention.

Vivant’s speciality is acne, but they can also successfully treat rosacea, melasma, eczema, and various aging concerns. Prices aren’t available online, but I was shocked at how reasonable the prices are- no, not just reasonable for something that works so well, reasonable in a way that you probably paid the same for your current cleanser as you would for theirs.

You’ll notice their website is basic (I’d love to see something more interactive and user friendly), same goes for their packaging, but it’s a pharmaceutical line and not something that was packaged beautifully to compete on a department store shelf. Beyond that, no complaints.

I’ll be trying more of their line very soon so look for additional info on Vivant in the months to come. In the meantime, if you’ve used Vivant, I’d love to hear how it worked for you.

Best Skin Care that Gives Plastic Surgery Results on Martino TV with Peter Thomas Roth, Freeze 24/7, and Kinerase

I was recently on Martino TV in Denver and I brought with me skin care with the latest and greatest technology. Peptides, neuropeptides, kinetin, and gaba- it’s all included in the science of skin. If you’re looking to make some big changes in your skin, check out the video below and see what technology might be a fit for you.

Some of the skin care I brought promised immediate results, so I got there a little early to try it on a few Martino TV staffers so we could photograph the results and air it along with the segment. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it all together in time, but the pictures were great nonetheless.

I used Kinerase Extreme Lift Eye to the woman below. Her ‘before’ is on the left and then 15 minutes later I took the ‘after.’ You can see the finer lines diminish and the overall clarity of the skin around the eyes improve.

We also used the Freeze 24/7 Anti-Aging Eye Serum (below). What a difference it made! Keep in mind also, that I was sure to have the women make the same facial expression in both photos and I tried to capture the photos the same way. I wasn’t trying to spin it one way or the other because I really wanted to see what the results were too.

Since I don’t have issues with firming (…yet) I gave it to someone who did so I could get some honest feedback on how the peptide-rich, Firmx works. She says she can see a noticeable improvement in her profile especially in her jowls after about 3 weeks of use. She also said she’ll buy it again- a popular sentiment since I see that it’s sold out online.

I really meant what I said about products that will take your skin in a new direction. Before even thinking about any type of cosmetic surgery rev up your skin care first- the results may really surprise you.

Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants Essence and Skin Lotion

Koh Gen Do has the same approach to creating skin care as they do with makeup. Keep it light and give the skin exactly what it needs. Their Oriental Plants line is comprised of 6 products that cater to skin in the middle and not in the extremes- meaning mostly normal skin that can tend to be dry or oily but fairly typical overall.

Pictured above are my favorites from the line, their Essence and Skin Lotion. Essence is a clear, weightless boosting serum to balance, hydrate and firm up the skin using plant based technology and known skin soothers. It makes my sometimes oily skin feel balanced with a comfortable moisture level.

Skin Lotion is a hydrator that locks in moisture and refreshes the skin surprisingly well considering it’s a clear fluid with a consistency slightly thicker than water. I love the idea of moisture in the absence of a heavy cream so the ingredients can absorb and treat the skin without being trapped on the surface wrapped in thick cream. This is usually why high-potency serums are in a liquid form, it’s a cleaner delivery system. It seems counterintuitive, but these light-in-weight serums can actually deliver better and more complete moisture to the skin than their thick and creamy counterparts.

Koh Gen Do is also a line completely against animal testing and has formulated products without petroleum, fragrance, artificial colors, and parabens long before it was fashionable to do so. You’ll also love the heavy glass bottles and beautiful packaging which to me are just a continuation of the product itself and the pride and work they’ve put into it all.
