essie Polish in jazz

Cheerier than the usual ‘greige’ shade that’s been so hot is this light chocolate milk colored polish by essie called jazz. It’s a perfect fall color because it isn’t cheery and candy-coated like the shades of pink we wear all summer, but it isn’t too dark like the shades of merlot our toes sport all winter long.  Although I do love the way a deeper shade looks on my fingers, I usually go for a lighter one that looks less obvious when the inevitable wear-off occurs.

A little closer

It’s not a part of their fall collection (which you can check out HERE) but it’s still in theme with the whole lavender, chocolate brown, taupe, and berry shades that seem to be the thing right now.

I found mine at Ulta, but you can get yours online at essieshop.com right HERE

Nordstrom Anniversary 2010 Beauty Exclusives

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Only second to Christmas in my book is Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale where new stuff comes in at big time discounts and all of the beauty brands offer value sets and exclusives that you won’t find anywhere else. You can shop the sale online and in-store from now until August 2, so let’s check out the specials that matter most; cosmetics.

Estee Lauder

Their super popular Pure Gloss collection is introducing 4 limited-edition shades just for this sale. Creative Director Tom Pecheux whipped up his favorite colors for the season, the ones he uses most in his personal kit for fashion shows and photo shoots. ($18)

Lauder is also having a free gift with purchases over $29.50, it’s a 7-piece set valued at $100.

Chanel

Everyone loves a Chanel shadow quad. I might have to get these shades of matte and shimmery wet/dry shadows because I love the flair they gave to otherwise neutral shades. ($65)

Dior

This ‘Ready-to-Wear’ Palette packs a lot of color into such a small space.  It includes 4 shadows, 2 lip glosses, 1 blush, a 3 tone bronzer, and 3 mini applicators in wearable shades to flatter most skin tones.

Deborah Lippmann

Looks like nail color goes from summer subtle to glittery glam this fall. Lippmann’s All That Jazz set includes the new, fun shades Razzle Dazzle, Some Enchanted Evening, and Lady Sings the Blues. ($40)

Bobbi Brown

This ‘Must Haves’ collection will be a hit with Bobbi Brown lovers because it’s so quintessential Bobbi. The set includes a 5 piece shadow palette with a dual ended brush, full sized Everything mascara, Ultrafine Eyeliner Brush (love), full sized Caviar gel liner, full sized Brownie lip color, and a Pink Blossom lip gloss. All told the set is valued at $150, but it’s a steal at $75.

Trish McEvoy

Add a little petite planner to your Trish planner collection. Her ‘Naturally Irresistible Collection’ includes a petite page for the mini planner with their new Warming Brightening Quad, 4 new shadow shades, black eye pencil, and Nude Shimmer gloss. ($95)

Laura Mercier

I might have to get Mercier’s Portable Beauty Collection just for the bag. They included their most popular shades into a split-pans for cheeks and eyes giving you 2 eye and 2 cheek colors. You also get a dual ended gloss, Long Lash mascara and dual-ended brush.

Every beauty line is offering something, these are just a few. You’ll find a complete listing of beauty exclusives and gift with purchases HERE

What is Shellac??

Shellac. It’s the hot new nail treatment everyone has been buzzing about. It has single handedly sent women back into salons and spas to get their nails and toes polished in shiny shades that will stay perfect for 2 weeks.

At first glance, the polishes look like any other, here’s what the display looks like with the available Shellac colors.

A little bit closer, the polishes and the bottles colors are pretty much identical.

Shellac is a polish hybrid that’s applied like a polish but stays on like a gel does. A CND nail professional will apply the polish to your nails and set it under a UV lamp for a few minutes. Once your hand is removed from the lamp, there is zero dry time. Your polish is set for the full two weeks without the risk of dulling, smudging, or chipping.

So it totally ruins your nails to remove it right? No way. After the two weeks, your nail professional will put little pads soaked with a solution over each nail for 10 minutes and  just wipe the color away. No drilling or filing needed so your nails stay strong and pristine.

Here’s the manicure day one with the color in Strawberry Smoothie.

Here’s another shot of the color exactly one week later.

And after 2 weeks. You can see the color grow out a little at the cuticle but the color is still super shiny and there isn’t any chipping.

It’s sandal season, so who doesn’t want a perfect mirror-finish pedicure on your toes for two weeks? Shellac is pretty amazing, give it a try and let me know what you think.

In Denver, I see Stacy Highland, but you can locate a salon near you that offers Shellac HERE.

Cheaper Versions of Popular Makeup

I met a woman recently who had great skin. She was 57 and I was putting makeup on her for a wedding. I asked her what skin care she used and she said something along the lines of ‘only the best’ and then rattled off some really expensive crap that I can’t stand and haven’t reviewed here. It’s overrated and doesn’t work half as well as its much lower priced counterparts. It’s not that it’s a horrible line, I just know that for that kind of money, there’s something better I can recommend.

A big part of my job is knowing the value of cosmetics. I’ve learned that the most expensive thing isn’t always the best and that the $1 drugstore item isn’t a total write-off. I know that my friends will all spend a little more for what they believe to be better, but love a bargain and will choose something less expensive if they can every time. This is for them and for all smart women out there who don’t shop based on ego alone.

Lancome Juicy Tubes vs. N.Y.C Color Extreme Lip Glider LIp Gloss

It’s hard to tell a difference between Lancome’s best selling $18 Juicy Tubes gloss and N.Y.C’s new $4 one. Same smooth-but-not-sticky feel with a hint of color and a yummy fruity scent.

O.P.I Atomic Orange vs. Wet N Wild Megalast Nail Color in Club Havana

I totally get that all polishes (or anything for that matter) aren’t created equally, but for the gal who just wants a quick coat of at-home color, Wet N Wild’s $2 version in one of spring’s hottest colors might just win out over O’P'I’s $8 bottle.

NARS Lip Gloss/ Lip Stain Gloss vs. e.l.f Lip Stain

Combining a gloss to go over an often times drying lip stain is a great combo that I’ve been seeing more and more, but few are offering them for $3. NARS sells their popular version for $28 which looks (and works) as well as the e.l.f one.

All bargain cosmetics shown are available at most drugstores nationwide.

Orly Foil FX Color Collection

Orly is dipping their toes into more modern waters these days by using different colors and finishes for each new collection. For summer I like to wear something really eye-catching on my toes, so I wear these Foil FX metallic polishes with a foil finish to really sparkle in the sun.

Rage is the pinkish one that’s almost a rose gold in the sunshine.
Luxe is the gold one, note my outstanding polishing skills.

Little better shot of Luxe.

They look a lot different in their bottles, you can’t tell how textured the finish is at all, but they aren’t smooth to the touch when they’re dry. There’s also another one called Shine that’s a perfect silver tone.

Spring 2010 Preview; SpaRitual and Orly

At the Long Beach Expo yesterday I caught up with Orly and SpaRitual to check out what they had in store for spring. Everyone was so helpful and sweet- which is great because I really like both lines so it’s always a nice surprise when the people at the company match up with how you view the line itself. That makes sense right?

Here are their spring collections along with a few other shades that caught my eye.

Believe (available now) is the new spring lineup for SpaRitual which includes 6 vibrant shades of crémes with one shimmer, Hope Springs Eternal (pink at right) that might be the first bright pink polish I’ve liked in a long time. On the left is Shoot for the Stars, I’m a sucker for anything purple.

Clearly, the star of the collection is Yes, I can, a leafy almost frog green that would look great on any skin tone. I got to see it on, it was eye-catching but not obnoxious or overdone. Jade who? This green is the new statement shade of the summer.

I couldn’t resist Spellbound, it looked like ruby red slippers. It’s mesmerizing. Perfect on toes that peek out of dressy sandals and flip-flops alike.

Orly chose all crémes for Sweet (out in April), their spring lineup of 6 candy colored pastels-with-a-kick that are sure to be a hit. Of course I wanted Lemonade, the airy yellow that was completely sold out (along with the rest of the line), but I managed to wrangle one of two Lollipops (below) that they had left. I can see why it cleared out so quick, I’d use every single color. It’s the ultimate in girly fun.

Here’s the complete lineup, left to right: Pixy Stix, Lollipop, Lemonade, Gumdrop, Cotton Candy, and Snowcone.

I know the collection isn’t new, but Metal Chic, their matte metallic trio, was new to me. I wasn’t sure what to think of matte polish at first, but I really like it. I’ve seen matte polishes look a little drab, but the addition of metallic sparkle made an edgy statement that’s easier to wear than you’d think.

I’m wearing Iron Butterfly (above left).

Keep in mind that bold polish look best on shorter nails. Updating your nail colors is a cheap and easy way to keep your look current and add a little splash of color when you need it.
