There’s A Serum For That…

Between cleansing and moisturizing lies an opportunity to make big changes to your skin by using a serum. Since the nature of a moisturizer is to be heavy and thick so it can soften the skin’s surface, its ingredients struggle to make their way down into the skin where they can make changes. A serum however, is a liquid with potent ingredients that can improve the skin since its light weight allows for better penetration therefore creating more change in the skin’s chemistry.

Think about serums like those commercials for IPhones, where they declare ’there’s an app for that’ because no matter what your skin’s needs, there’s a serum for that. Here are a few hardworking serums that treat various skin concerns.

For Dry Skin

SkinMedica’s Hydrating Complex serum boosts your skin’s ability to hydrate itself by giving it a surge of weightless moisture using hyaluronic acid that dissolves almost immediately. Use it daily or just when your skin is feeling extra thirsty and lifeless.

For Red, Irritated Skin

Covering up skin that’s red and irritated is hard to achieve. You could pile a yellow-based foundation on to try and neutralize the red, or you could use PCA Skin’s Anti-Redness Serum to visibly reduce redness caused by sun exposure, rosacea, or inflamed skin. It visibly brings down redness in weeks so your skin looks calm and healthy.

For Aging Concerns

Stem cell repair and protection from future damage is what ExCELLent Future Deep Repairing Serum from Lumene is all about. It targets the very cause of wrinkles and aging skin by making sure the skin’s most important cells are in their very best condition.

To Maintain Your Skin’s Current State

Advanced Night Repair has been a best-selling star in the Lauder line for years. It’s one of the very first antioxidants on the market and its customers are loyal. Not only does it zap environmental pollutants on contact before they can do damage on the skin, it also repairs any past damage and creates an environment on the skin that’s free of inflammation so that your skin today will look just as good years from now.

Whether you’re trying to make changes to your skin, or just maintain what you have now, there’s a serum out there that’s perfect for you.

Obagi Condition & Enhance System

You’ve spent the money to get your skin looking great, now you need to maintain it. Obagi has a collection that will keep discoloration, fine lines, redness and future damage away. Their complete Condition & Enhance System contains 6 products that are clinically designed to improve the effectiveness of IPL, chemical peels, and other facial treatments to give you a better result.

If you’ve not tried Obagi (or come across it anywhere) it’s probably because it’s a line sold by doctors and plastic surgeon due to its extreme effectiveness and active ingredients, you need a doctor to pair you up with the products that will benefit you most.

Condition & Enhance  offers effectiveness that’s essentially guaranteed for issues like hyperpigmentation and acne scaring because Clear and Blender each contain 4% hydroquinone, a proven skin lightener that’s been a doctor’s skin bleaching go-to for years.  Your fine lines, redness, and overall texture will be addressed with Exfoderm Forte which combines 6% glycolic acid with 4% lactic acid to soften the skin allowing the treatment to work better, and the cells to turn over so newer, brighter skin will surface.

When you’re changing your skin and bringing new skin forward, it’s important to use SPF every single day. Their Healthy Skin Protection moisturizer that’s included offers a broad spectrum protection (UVA/UVB) with a physical block (zinc) and a chemical one for maximum protection on your delicate skin.

It’s an advanced line for real skin concerns. Click HERE to find a medical professional in your area who can offer direction on which system might be best for you.

Vivant Skincare for Acne

I’ve been thinking about what I’d say in this review for a while now. For what I do, I try really hard not to make definitive statements branding something to be the ‘very best’ or ‘end all be all cure’ since having a voice in this way delicate thing. I’m not Oprah, but I know that when I review something that I’m truly thrilled about, many of you go out and spend money on it and I take that seriously.

But here’s the thing, my skin looks better than it has in well over 3 years and I know it’s because of Vivant.

It might be due to everything I try out on my skin (every single thing you read about on here in fact) or maybe it’s just a weird hormonal adjustment my body is making, but my face has been breaking out like crazy for years now. I’ve also been struggling with redness and a lot of sun spots from my late teens and 20′s where I *gasp* used tanning beds somewhat regularly and didn’t even own sunscreen.

I guess if you’re struggling with acne you should trust the man who (literally) wrote the book on it. Dr. Fulton struggled with acne so severely growing up that he was determined to figure out what its causes were, so he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and began formulating products in his own practice and eventually co-creating Retin-A. His latest and most complete line to date, Vivant is the result of many formulations and years of his experience in the treatment of acne and aging skin. I believe it’s truly a gift to people who have wasted money on products that didn’t live up to their claims.

I’ll show you exactly what I’ve been using, but keep in mind it was chosen by Vivant for me based on my skin’s particular needs. You can reach out to them (their customer service is amazing) by calling 1-800-9-VIVANT or find a professional near you who uses Vivant and can help you find a custom solution.

BP Cleanser 3% is a thick, pink exfoliating cleanser with 3% Benzoyl Peroxide- a known known acne fighter that kills bacteria and chases away excess oil. I like the exfoliation too which leaves my skin really soft. It’s not a makeup remover though, so I use a pre-cleaning solution before it just to loosen the makeup a little- especially on the eyes.

After cleansing I use the Normalizing tonic Forté in the morning, a Glycolic rich toner that clarifies and deep cleans so the products can better absorb. At night after cleansing, I use  Daily Repair Pads with Mandelic Acid, a well-tolerated alpha hydroxy they combine with zinc peptides that clear out impacted pores. If you’re having issues with pigmentation, these pads will also help cycle those out.

After the Forté toner in the morning, I use Spin Trap Vitamin C&E Serum, a clear soothing protectant that guards cells against daily oxidative stress. At night, in its place I did something I hadn’t done in a while, I ditched my Retin-A. It wasn’t easy since I’ve been using it for so long and I really believe in the power of retinol. I knew though, that the Exfol-A was the equivalent in strength to a .25 Retin-A but it also contained Kojic, Lactic, and Glycolic Acids to lighten sun and acne spots.

BP 10% Gel Medication is a strong spot treatment I use when I can feel something just starting to pop up, but it doesn’t make my skin dry or flakey.

Some of the ingredients like the vitamin a might make skin a little more sun-sensitive so I use their Day Treatment Lotion SPF 15 as my daily moisturizer.

I don’t need a lot of moisture at night, so I found Totaloe to be just enough. It’s an aloe-based serum-gel that helps to heal and calm the skin as well adds a touch of hydration.

Again, this is just what was recommended for my skin specifically based on what I was trying to achieve, the condition of my skin, and what it was used to judging from the products I had been using (like a strong Retin-A).  It was an á la carte regimen, but keep in mind they also have systems for acne, aging skin, discoloration, and basic environmental  prevention.

Vivant’s speciality is acne, but they can also successfully treat rosacea, melasma, eczema, and various aging concerns. Prices aren’t available online, but I was shocked at how reasonable the prices are- no, not just reasonable for something that works so well, reasonable in a way that you probably paid the same for your current cleanser as you would for theirs.

You’ll notice their website is basic (I’d love to see something more interactive and user friendly), same goes for their packaging, but it’s a pharmaceutical line and not something that was packaged beautifully to compete on a department store shelf. Beyond that, no complaints.

I’ll be trying more of their line very soon so look for additional info on Vivant in the months to come. In the meantime, if you’ve used Vivant, I’d love to hear how it worked for you.

PCA Skin Perfecting Face & Body Hydrator SPF 30

Recently I’ve noticed a huge trend in sun protection- they’ve been adding SPF to moisturizers in a way that makes it easy to use daily and guard against the damage that occurs over time in small doses of daily sun. PCA Skin’s Perfecting Face & Body Hydrator is a skin quencher so light in weight and so neutral in scent that it’s an ideal daily SPF 30 that carries The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation.

As a moisturizer, its licorice extract, and kojic and lactic acids help to fade sun spotting in a light also base giving light yet complete moisture. You do get broad-spectrum protection from both UVA (think A for aging) and UVB (think B for burning) rays, but they also pumped it full of antioxidants to protect your skin from future environmental damage.

So many times I think companies claim you can use a body product on your face too just for the sake of marketing, but with this fantastic combination of ingredients , it’s actually true. This is a complete moisture and SPF solution that you will find yourself using every day.

Supporting Local Companies; Sanitas

What started out as a few high-potency skin treatments used by estheticians has blossomed over the past 20 years into a full skin and body care line based right here in Boulder, Colorado.

What I like most about the line are their products that target specific concerns that other lines miss. Their Callus Cream ($30) softens and retextures rough patches of skin using lactic and salicylic acid and prevents new calluses from forming with use over time.

I also love their Vitmain C Lotion ($23) for the bodythat not only softens using hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil, but brightens the skin as well with vitamin c.

PCA Skin C-Quench

Vitamin C is one of those rare one-size-fits-all ingredients that most women should incorporate into their skin care routines. I’ve gone over the benefits of Vitamin C, especially in the form of L-ascorbic acid. More specifically, L-ascorbic serums in air-tight, shaded glass bottles, just like C-Quench by PCA Skin.

PCA Skin is a professional line that offers professional results in the form of powerhouse treatments that knock out most major skin issues from discoloration and wrinkles, to acne and scaring- and they have plenty of before and after photos to back their claims up.

They carry 3 C-based treatments, but the C-Quench is the one I used. It has 15% L-ascorbic and it helps with skin laxity, lines, and pore minimization.  It had an instant smoothing effect on my skin and it gave such a radiance boost that I often didn’t need to use foundation after.

Add C-Quench into your basic skin routine for added skin protection benefits, or check out their ‘Solution‘ kits (also available in trial-size) which contain a combination of specific products you need to achieve your skin’s desired result.

What I can say for sure is this, PCA Skin takes education seriously which shows in their website- a vast wealth of info broken down into understandable summaries for each product.
