Smashbox Fall 2009 Reign Collection

You know I love me some Smashbox, so I was really excited to check out their latest offering, Reign, a regal, luxurious, richly pigmented collection for fall.

I knew that their Spring Muse collection would be a hard act to follow since its contents remain on a super steady rotation in my kit. Muse was a candy-colored, all-out, girly delight- a feast for the eyes that brought out our inner 9 year old delighting to get my hands on every shade.

Reign spins decadence, indulgence, and diva together (think Fergie) into this concise collection of essentials that make sexy a snap.

Front and center are their 2 new eye shadow palettes, Monarch and Majesty (pictured above) which kind of resemble…um… a row of colorful boobs. The outside layer of the circle is a shimmery, lighter companion of the darker middle shade. Both palettes contain fleshy toned base shades, but Monarch has rich copper and ashy chocolate while Majesty has  pure black with a maroon combination that I can’t use enough.

Their blush, gloss, and new Doubletake Lip Color (liner on one end, creamy lip color on the other) all have a peach meets pink vibe- a color that will flatter all skin tones. If you like the gloss, get the blush too (and vice versa) the two together are powerfully sexy and can make a look all on their own.

I’m still on the fence about the packaging which does fit the overall vibe and message, but isn’t as sleek as I would’ve liked to see, but hey- it’s what’s inside that counts right? Check the colors out in person the next time you’re near a Nordstrom or Sephora, but buy them online since all of the products are currently marked way down.

Smashbox Master’s Class GlamourEyes

Smashbox’s overall theory on makeup matches mine, which is why I think I love most everything they offer, including their addicting artsy-yet-easy videos that show step by step instructions on how to achieve different looks. This one is so easy, no eyeliner is required.

You’ve heard me talk about layering cream and powder shadows together for a rich, lasting look which you’ll see in the video. He also touches on matching your lips and cheeks which you should always do (and I never say always when it comes to makeup). Her skin was left natural- no powder on top to matte out the luminosity for a true everyday look that transcends all ages and occasions.

It’s pretty clear that Smashbox doesn’t just want to sell you makeup, they want to teach you how to use it, so their new Master Class GlamourEyes kits are basically a makeup artist in a box with photo instructions to teach you how to use everything the kit includes. Three kits are offered according to eye color; brown (pictured), blue, and hazel.

The kits are worth $175 and contain their best loved products for the eyes to really make them pop. Use the cream liner along the lash line smudging it into the lid, and layer it with the powder shadows that are so velvety and easy to blend it’s almost impossible to get it wrong. Their instructions are really easy to follow, and they also include tips for various eye shapes including hooded which I’m always asked about.

Bottom line- typically in kits like this, only one or two products included are really worth the buy, but here every single product will get a proper workout.

Smashbox High Definition Liquid Concealer

Smashbox knows that a great concealer doesn’t have to look and feel like clay in order to give total coverage. Some concealers are too thick which leads to a whole bunch of problems including an unnatural look since it’s too heavy to blend into the skin surrounding the area you’re trying to conceal.

High Definition Liquid Concealer is smooth as silk completely disappearing into blemishes and imperfections covering them with a natural finish. Just a dab coves most anything, but you can build it in layers for more stubborn spots.

Available in 5 Shades, Fair-Medium/Dark, $18, Smashbox.com, Sephora, Nordstrom, and Select Department Stores Nationwide

Smashbox Waterproof Shadow Liner Duo

Time and again I’ve maintained that the true difference between a professional eye makeup application and a rookie one is the layering of creme on top of powder shadow because of the rich effect it gives. Smashbox is no stranger to professional grade products since they’re responsible for some of the most innovative beauty products out there like their Waterproof Shadow Liner Duos.

Select from 4 sleek mirrored compacts with 2 coordinating shades, one deeper than the other but both formulated to be used as shadows, or liners. Smudge them across your lids with fingertips, or use brushes for more precision- either way the color will glide on, blend easily, and last for hours (um, hello- waterproof?!) I use these on all of my brides so their eyes are sparkling fresh throughout the night and to really grab onto the powder shadow keeping it vibrant and crease-free. It’s also one of my #1 recommendations for the bride looking to do her own makeup since the waterproof factor during the summer is a huge plus.

You can also enjoy the duo the old fashioned way by using the lighter shade on the lid and the deeper as a liner- don’t worry about making the liner perfect either, having it smudged along the lash line is super sexy especially in the hot summer months.

Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer

I love Shadow Insurance, and went through a few tubes of it, but my loyalty was recently tested with Smashbox’s Photo Finish Lid Primer.

I missed the ease of a wand and a thicker, more matte creme. It rids your lids of any redness and preps it for a crease-free shadow experience. The new formula, available only through Sephora, boasts a patented delivery system which ensures all ingredients are absorbed into the skin for maximum benefits. Oily lids will find it matte enough to keep shadows in place, and dry or more mature lids will love the soft focus pearls which reduce the appearance of fine lines.
