I didn’t love this house when we first moved into it about a year and a half ago. We built our last home and I spent hours choosing finishes so I loved every single detail of every single room. This dining room was not our style at all, and even though I wanted to change it immediately I took my time thinking about what I really wanted. I knew I didn’t want to play it safe with the sea of grey I used before- I wanted more eclectic and I wanted black. There was a tile from Riad that caught my eye because I knew it would be a centerpiece for the space. I’m so happy I took a chance! The pattern is perfect and every time I walk by the room I’m so happy.
A look at the space complete with piano for the girls that they use for practice every day. I didn’t want a huge piano taking up a whole room so this is perfect and it matches!
A closer look at the tile. Our friend who installed it said it was one of the most challenging he’d worked with. It took him hours and several weekends but it was worth it. I love how unusual it is and how the pattern is eye catching without being overwhelming.
A look from our ‘formal’ room which is actually the one with the shining chairs that we wanted to be as non-formal as possible. We didn’t want a room that nobody ever went into and the girls swing in these chairs every single day.
And before- slate tile and a drab blue was a sad combination. This was also before we painted the whole house white which was such a good decision. When we first saw the stark white without anything on the walls it was really shocking and I didn’t know if it was the right thing to do, but everything looks so open and bright and clean.
You can see the patching we did to cover holes in the wall from some really terrible rods and curtain panels. I saw black painted window frames on Pinterest a while ago and knew that’s what I wanted. It makes all the difference, I don’t think I’d like the room as well without that feature.
Take that chance when it comes to design! Use the colors you love. Don’t think about resale or huge parties you rarely throw. Just imagine what you love and go for it.
